Just wondering if there are any outdoor grower's here or all indoor only?
I am in the southern hemisphere and am getting ready to start harvesting, just got to worry about damn police chopper's at the moment!
The weather is just starting to get a bit of a chill in the air, which is good for the girl's. :D

I will be starting my FIRST outdoor grow this year! My growbuddy had to close down being he is moving and since I have lil ones I am just not comfy to have it in MY house indoors. Maybe in the future if I can get a sweet setup that looks like a wardrobe closet with good ventilation which I plan on in the future.
Anywhos....I am real excited & hope I have some nice buds when I am done. Any tips from you all would be appreciated! :D

Hi Mermaid,
You will need to dig a hole approx 20-24 inche's square and around 8 inche's deep.
I found it better to prepare the hole/hole's a few month's before you plan on puttin gthe plant's in,as this give's the microbe's and other buggy thing's time to do their job.
Once you loosen the soil add your fert's and other secret "herb's and spice's" and just water occasionally to keep thing's active.
Watering is/can be a real pain in the arse, seriousely !
Try to find a water source near where your plant's are,but in a secluded spot.
Hope that get's you on your way,if you are unclear about anything, just holler. :D

Thanks Herbgrower...I plan on digging it this week being I am off for spring break. I have my site all picked out! It is secluded and is on my property. Water is not an issue...I have that all figured out too. :)
Glad to know I have ppl like you to pick your brains and ask questions...once I get growin, I am sure I will have lots to ask! ;)

Just thought of something for ya.
The reason the hole's are relatively short is because of wind,i found that if the hole was like 2' deep there was more chance of losing the plant, being blown over,as happened to me.
The root's will go out, which is what you want to give the plant support.
Horse and cow shit are good for outdoor growing too,if ya can handle the smell, bit of chook shit don't hurt either ! :D

hmmmm, I dunno' there herbgrower, maybe it's cuz you folks downundda' have that gravity tryin' to pull things outta' the ground..(how do your women keep their skirts from fallin' up over their head all the time.??) , but I've found the bigger and deeper the hole...the better.I shoot for 4'x4'x at least 2' deep.
..The larger the rootmass....the larger the plant it can support.

No dis-respect Hill billy, but after tying up 7 different plant's because i went for the "deep" hole's,it was very heart-breaking to see the girl's lying in the dirt.
After doing some more research,i have discovered that the plant is better off having a shallow but wide hole as this give's the plant more stability as the root's are spreading outward's to get their nute's.
Just relaying what i went through this year is all. :smoke2:

Got to agree with ya there Hill billy ! ;)
But since i got my girl's into the bondage thing, haven't had much of a problem with them falling down.
What i did find was that it was usually during pissing down rain and heavy wind's that you tend to have the problem's.
If ya do get a bad storm where ur plant's are located, check them as soon as possible, that's my best advice,oh,and make sure you got some twine and a knife in ya pocket, just in case ! :D

Hillbilly or Herbs?
Do you ever fence your plants in as well? I have a BIG deer problem & in the summers it is all that protects my tomatoe plants from them. I have lost many veggie gardens in the past form those stinkers. I do feed them so prolly why they are in my yard all the time...just lil piggies they are!

No deer over here Mermaid! :D
Just 'roo's,wallaby's and feral pig's,(luckily i have not come across any of those, thank God!)
Do you have a dog Mermaid or have a friend that does ?
This will sound gross but it does work!
Collect the doggey-doo and take it to your site and spread it around the vicinity of your garden, the deer shouldn't like the "odour" from the dog dropping's.
Alternatively, you could buy a roll of fencing wire, get a big fire going and drop the wire into it.
What this does is "burn's" off all the shiny bit's and make's the wire dull and rusty looking, help's to blend in with the surrounding's,especialy from the air. :D
Don't forget to let it cool down COMPLETELY before you handle it,or rinse off with water.
The only thing i really don't like about wire is that it don't "move" in the wind,so if some-one does happen to notice it ya got more chance of getting ripped off or narked in,just my opinion. :cool2:
Also,i got the feeling you may have to make these 'cages' big and strong coz the deer can jump high and are fairly large animal's?
Just looking at the labour involved in making a BIG cage is all.
If i have been un-clear or vague, let me know and i will do my best to further explain myself ! ;)

Herb I have to say that the dog doo trick don't work so well. Not for the deer round here anyway. I have a 10 x 20 pen for my dogs out back and they poop and piss in there quite a bit. If I bring them in the house for the night there will be deer tracks all around that pen in the morning. They are smart animals for sure. Never under estimate the enemy! :p
Mermaid
04-05-2005, 06:28 PM
Yep I have dog poop.... LOTS of it! I have a 120lb yellow lab & it don't skeer these deer.....they are used to my dog. In fact they don't even run from him anymore...they are way too tame from me feeding them. In the summer I have literally had them come up to my kitchen windows that are set low and my lil one feeds them thru the window.
Gonna have to build a cage I am afraid....but I do like the idea of setting it on fire! Thanks for that info....good idea! Think I will try that one! I do plan on making it tall as I KNOW how they jump! :D
btw..."Sparky" you know me too well! But will Herb like ya spankin him too? :p

Don't know if you guy's got "barbed" wire over there,it can be tricky to handle, but the sharp point's should deter the deer.
We use it for cattle fence's over here, but you can tie length's to the cage to stop them knocking into it.

Yeah i have to agree, that avi is a bit frightening there sparky. Mermaid are you starting your plants indoors, or just putting seeds outside? Seems by your situation you maybe just putting seeds out. I have found much better success outdoors with plants that were started indoors and vegged for a lil bit. I think preditors are more likely to go for the smaller plants. I am in the midwest, and deer are as common as squirrels here. I believe human urine will keep them away too. Better start collecting :D

outdoorer in south FLorida,Cant wait to get them in the ground in june.Getting harder and harder to grow in S Fla.,too many people.
If yopu can keep you plants safe till they are about 12 inches high the problem with deer seems to go away.I dont know if its something in south Florida or if the plants change taste and/or texture but it works down here.

Normally I grow outdoor every year. This year will be the exception. I have found that deer normally stop eating the plants once they are in flower. I am sure there are exceptions to that, but I've found it to be consistantly true. Also if there is a more favorable browse around usually they will leave the mj alone. It is also getting harder, and harder in the mid-west also.If it ain't rippers, and deer, its pig choppers.

Who said pigs cant fly?
I was in the spotlight of one whilst spinning my car up in a field, long time back. I took off and lost it. Well thats my side of the story anyway :D
Oh and we had one collide with a traffic spotter plane once above our main motorway in the city center. Hell of a mess.
So maybe they can fly, but not very well :bongdude:

Planted the girls outside this past weekend and so far they are looking great! The only problem I have had with any of my gardens is the groundhogs and moles. I have veggie and flower gardens all over my yard and even a natural pond which I have bee bombs growing for the humming birds. I have traps set ....so one groundhog already took a lil ride with me...haha Needless to say he lives about 10 miles from my house now...I am nice and never shoot at them but lemme tell ya...I want to at times. As for my love/hate relationship with my deer family...well they already ate my daffadils but I got that all under control. A good frd said I should just plant them thier own garden so they will leave mine alone. LOL I already have a strawberry patch for my turtle friends so why not I suppose. The only reason they got the daffadils is they were growing where it wasnt fenced in. At night I have about 20 deer at times who come to feed in my yard. Yah I am a softy and feed them.....there is about 4 that will eat out of your hand. They come up to my kitchen windows looking for my daughter as she is the one who loves to feed them. Anywhos.....I think I have everything now protected & traps set for the pesky lil critters. The moles and groundhogs are a real pain but now I have MORE traps...I will be relocating them to new homes instead of mine.

Here is a little idea I have been toying with. We have More cornfields than you can shake a stick at up here, alas that is also where the cops look the hardest. I was thinking how would be the best way to beat the choppers at their own game? Then I thought how about using technology that is readily available. Here is the plan. A little late for me this year, but just the same I think it is a great idea. here goes. Step one: Aquire a GPS. Step 2: Learn how to use GPS. Step 3: Make as many clones as you care to plant. Now here goes the operation. Pick a couple of large cornfields, preferably ones that have grown good crops regularly in the past. Once the corn is up,and has been sprayed, usually about 10" high. Go in ,and plant you plants. Spread them out at least 100-150 ft apart, and mark each plant as a waypoint. Make sure you stay in the field at least a couple hundred ft, and continue in as deep as you can. Here is the Logic behind this plan. By spreading them out,and marking with GPS it will be next to impossible for rippers to find them all, and you will have absolutely no trouble in finding them yourself. Now say the cops fly over, and spot them. Sad indeed, but at least you can take comfort in the fact that the cops will have to spend a ton of time flying over the field either guiding in ground forces,or dropping in pullers. The positive here is the cops going in on the ground will be getting there asses kicked by the corn. Try walking through a large dense cornfield sometime, you'll see what I mean. Also the time they will have to spend on just one field will limit their ability to spend time ripping others crops up. Is that a beautiful plan ,or what? I love GPS. :smoke2:

Not sure what kinda farmers you have there but the ones we have here walk their fields regularly and most of them dont know one weed from another just that its a weed and its not corn so it gets pulled up and dropped. The ones we grow alongside the field dont get touched at all. Corn is also around and harvested about the same time your weed should be if not a few days sooner for the weed. That problem being the weed is still pretty green and the corn and most surrounding stuff has gone a light beige in color.
Normally around here the soonest corn will be harvested is the 2nd week of October. There are a slew of other factors that will usually prolong the corn harvest well into late November. Farmers quite often will walk bean fields, and some may even walk a little in the corn when it is young, but once it is up over your head unless your a glutton for punishment, your not going to go trampling around in a corn field. The way mine are spread out deep in the field, if they are found I guess it was meant to be. But for them all to be found, a ripper, or farmer would have to be very lucky. Same goes for LEO if they want them they will have to go through a gauntlet of corn to get them. They are used to having it pretty easy with cornfields, I say it's time we change it up for them.
Heath_Bogenreif
06-17-2005, 02:41 PM
The other reason we tend not to use the fields is out of respect to the farmer and the simple fact that they can and usually will narc your ass out to the po-po if they find enough " random " weed growing on their property.
Well Heath I am sure the farmers apreciate how much you care  Seriously. I honestly do no damage to the corn at all. When I plant MJ I simply dig up one corn, and transplant it in the middle of the row, they grow up to be great blockers. I'm curious on how the farmer is going to nark you out? Do you just mean he will narc out the plants. More realistic.
Heath_Bogenreif

Depends what county around here you grow in and how busy their DTF is. Some farmers will pull them and then some farmers will call the police and report it when they find it. The police will check it out and if the drug task force has nothing better to do they have setup surveillance before to catch whoevers growing there. Four door sedans parked in the middle of nowhere stick out like a sore thumb.
Your right Heath I guess it depends on the situation. Here though surveilence is not an option , or I should say it would not be an effective option. Also some corn is grown strictly for sylage( I doubt that is spelled right) Which is ground up for cattle feed. So before you grow around a cattle operation beware the corn may be chopped down around the first of september.
