All - Time Highs by Jorge Cervantes
The modern era of marijuana cultivation and breeding has produced a plethora of cannabis strains. Like a fine wine, a strain of marijuana is a story in and of itself. Here are 10 of them

#1) Haze
Haze has been my favorite variety since 1983, when Neville, founder of the seed bank, gave me a big branch for my trip back to Amsterdam from the Cannabis Castle. Developed in the early 1970s by the Haze Brothers in Central California, Original Haze was bred by crossing Colombian/Mexican hybrids the first year. A South Indian male was crossed with the best Colombian/Mexican female offspring the second year. The Third year, the best females were crossed with an imported Thai Male. Now there are many versions of the Original Haze. Neville's Haze is one of the strongest I have seen,
Haze is often crossed with other varieties that ripen much quicker. Some of the favorite crosses include Buddha (Dutch Passion), Fuma con Diablos (Flying Dutchmen) And Northern lights#5 x Haze (Sensi Seeds).

Genotype: Sativa, Colombian, Mexican, Thai and either South Indian or Jamaican.
Taste: Distinctively sweet-spicy, intense pine-lemon with perfumed, scented hash.
Smell: Very distinctive order; smell it once and you remember it forever.
High: Clear, up, soaring, vivacious, animated,
Potency: 15% - 18% THC; some varieties are more potent than others.
Culture: Difficult, long-maturing, hyper-prone to over fertilization.
Traits: Long, lanky with wispy buds.
Yield: Low, definitely for connoisseurs.
Disease/Pest Resistance: Very resistant to diseases and pest.
Indoors: Three months or more.
Outdoors: Harvest late December through February if climate allows.
Ease to Manicure: Slow.
Water Hash Quality / Quantity from Trim: Great.

#2) Skunk#1
Skunk#1 is the ultimate classic. Nearly half of Dutch-grown seeds and Canadian varieties today have a portion of Skunk#1 genes. Skunk#1 was developed in 1978 by California-based Sacred Seeds. This single strain transformed marijuana breeding in the Netherlands and the rest of the world. The winner of numerous harvest festivals, including the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, you can't go wrong with this variety. Sensi seeds registered the name, but you can find Skunk#1 at numerous seed banks-plus, there's a little bit of skunk in countless other varieties. This long history has made Skunk#1 and most of the direct derivatives one of the least expensive varieties available.

Genotype: Colombian Sativa / Afghani Indica x Acapulco Gold (Mexican Sativa).
Taste: Fruity Sweet.
Smell: Distinctively skunky and sweet, strong but not overpowering.
High: Soaring, cerebral.
Potency: 8% THC; great stone, able to function on it; low CBD.
Culture: Easy to grow, but sensitive to over fertilization.
Traits: High flower-to=leaf-ratio; thick long colas, prone to long internodal spacing.
Yield: Very high.
Disease / Pest Resistance: Susceptible to mold during flowering.
Indoors: 60 - 70 days; early-flowering varieties are available.
Outdoors: Mid-October; excellent greenhouse crop.
Ease to Manicure: Very Easy
Water Hash Quality / Quantity from Trim: Good.

#3) Northern Lights#5
This strain was developed by " The Indian" on an island in the Northwest. He started with 11 seeds and named them NL#1, NL#2 and so on. Of the plants, Nl#5, NL#8 and NL#1 were the best, in that order. Neville of the Seed Bank shuttled clones back to Amsterdam from Seattle in the mid-80s. Today, Northern Lights #5 is the main variety that breeders use. It's often crossed with other varieties, such as Blueberry, Haze, Juicy Fruit and Jack Herer. Varieties are available from Sensi Seeds (who Registered the name), Canadian Professionals and Nirvana. At least 70 different varieties contain NL genetics. Northern Lights #5 is an absolute must if you grow indoors.

Genotype: Predominately Afghani Indica/Thai Sativa; very stable.
Taste: Strong, full-bodied, hashy.
Smell: Sweet, piney.
High: Body/cerebral stone can cause couch-lock.
Potency: 14 - 16% THC; very strong; great resin production.
Culture: Easy to grow; can be pushed with fertilizer.
Traits: High Flower-to-leaf ratio, compact buds, purple tinge to leaves as plant matures.
Yield: Very good; a favorite among Commercial growers.
Disease / Pest Resistance: Somewhat resistant to thrips and spider mites.
Indoors: 60 - 70 days.
Outdoors: Early October.
Ease to Manicure: Easy and fast.
Water Hash Quality / Quantity from Trim: Good but low volume.

#4) AK-47
Ak-47 is very easy to grow and easy to clone. The strong fragrance requires odor control when grown indoors. Originally developed in 1992 by Simon from Serious Seeds, Ak-47 has been one of their flagships varieties. In 1999, Simon finally isolated the chromosomes from one of the two phenotypes through a series of crosses and back-crosses with the parent plants. Genetic qualities are very stable in all climates. America refugees in Amsterdam coined the name AK-47 because it's one-hit wonder with a strong, instantaneous, soaring high.

Genotype: Mainly Sativa; one-third Indica; Colombian, Mexican Thai and Afghani cross.
Taste: Sweet, woody, smooth; a dry toke of this strain reminds me of Fruit Loops.
Smell: Extremely Fragrant, fruity aroma; odor control necessary.
High: Soaring cerebral Sativa stone; very potent; after several hits, you get spacey and motor functions become difficult.
Potency: 21+% THC; extremely strong, frosted with resin.
Culture: Very easy to grow and clones root easily; needs medium-to-low nutrient level.
Traits: Medium height, prolific branching.
Yield: Properly grown, will yield 0.5 grams per watt for every 30 days of flowering.
Disease / Pest Resistance: Susceptible to airborne bacteria in extreme situations.
Indoors: 65-70 days.
Outdoors: Mid-to late October.
Ease to Manicure: High bud-to-leaf ratio; manicuring is easy and relatively fast.
Water Hash Quality / Quantity from Trim: Excellent.

#5) Kali Mist
One of the best predominately Sativa strains available today, Kali Mist is one of my personal favorites because of the potent, soaring cerebral stone. Developed by Serious Seeds, Kali Mist was improved in 2000 to produce heavier yields. Many growers report 100% females when cultivating Serious Seed. Sagarmatha has also done a lot of work with Kali Mist. Other excellent versions are available from Reeferman and Willy Jack.

Genotype: 90% Sativa; very consistent, with little variation.
Taste: Delicious; spicy with no burn.
Smell: Spicy and not overbearing.
High: Strong, clear, cerebral; creeper rush; long-lasting/
Potency: 18-20% THC; strong; good stash plant.
Culture: Easy to grow and clone; handles heat and drought well outdoors; buds could need trellis for support.
Traits: Tall, classic Sativa; high bud-to-leaf ratio; develops buds from top to bottom; long white pistils.
Yield: Good, dense clusters of fluffy but heavy buds.
Disease / Pest Resistance: Resistant to powdery mildew and bud mold.
Indoors: 65 - 75 days.
Outdoors: Great, big plants.
Ease to Manicure: Medium fast.
Water Hash Quality / Quantity from Trim: Outstanding.

#6) Blueberry
Blueberry originated in the late'70s on the West Coast. DJ Short, an outstanding breeder, created it. Blueberry refers to the taste, not the fact that it turns blue in late flowering. Many companies have their Blueberry version - Dutch Passion, Reeferman Seeds, Dr. Atomic and Willy Jack, to name a few. Feminized Blueberry seeds are very popular and used extensively for crosses with other varieties.
Cooler temperatures (below 70F) cause purple coloring. The Dutch Passion variety is particularly purple. But breeders seem to prefer DJ Short's Original Blueberry.

Genotype: 80% Indica, 20% Sativa; Highland, Thai, Purple Thai and Afghani Indica.
Taste: Succulent, fruity blueberry flavor is retained for hours; depending on mother selection, sweet to very berry.
Smell: Very fragrant, fruity smell.
High: Joyous, euphoric, but still able to function.
Potency: 18-20%THC; very strong; mildly hallucinogenic.
Culture: Not for novice growers; sensitive to over fertilization and warm temperatures.
Traits: Short, squat-to-medium height; medium-to-large calyxes; often turns blue to lavender when cured.
Yield: Very heavy when properly grown.
Disease / Pest Resistance: Can have problems with spider mites and thrips.
Indoors: 55 - 60 days
Outdoors: Mid-to late October.
Ease to Manicure: Quick; good bud-to-leaf ratio.
Water Hash Quality / Quantity from Trim: Great.

#7) White Widow Family
Originally Developed by Masta Seeds, a Dutch company, as Peacemaker; Shantibaba, then working for the greenhouse, refined the varieties: White Widow, White Shark, White Rhino and White Russian (Serious). Te winner of many awards, this is one of the royal families of cannabis. The related strains are packed with resin that buds appear white, Almost every seed company has its own cross or version of this family.

Genotype: Primarily Indica; Brazilian and Indian.
Taste: Smooth, mellow, strong, fruity.
Smell: Very pungent; sour coupled with sweetness.
High: Couch-lock to heady.

Indoors: 65 - 70 days.
Outdoors: Mid- to Late October.
Ease to Manicure: Medium Difficulty.
Water Hash Quality / Quantity from Trim: Good.

#8) Hash Plant
This imported jewel seems to have sprung up simultaneously all over the West Coast of North America. One of the strongest Hash Plants from the Northwest was shuttled to Amsterdam by Neville of the Seed Bank in the Mid- '80s. There are five or six distinct Hash Plants. Reeferman has four Different varieties. More than 150 different Hash Plants crosses are available at numerous companies. It's a great addition to any breeding program.

Genotype: 25%Nl#1, 75% Hash Plant
Taste: Very hashy; sweet, spicy; underlying tanginess.
Smell: Sweet and spicy.
High: Cause couch-lock; very strong.
Potency: 14+% THC; Very potent and resinous.
Culture: Slow-growing; vulnerable to bud mold if the humidity's too high.
Traits: Compact, stocky; many branches.
Yield: Fair to good.
Disease / Pest Resistance: Spider mite prone.
Indoors: 55-60 days.
Outdoors: Late October to early November.
Ease to Manicure: Leafy but resinous; semi-slow.
Water Hash Quality / Quantity from Trim: Good.

#9) G-13
According to the legend, "G" stands for "Government", and the 13th letter of the alphabet is "M" (for marijuana). This strain was purportedly pinched from the US government's Marijuana Research Facility in Mississippi. I've search high and low and found no credible sources to substantiate this story. A very strong Indica, G-13 is most often crossed with other varieties to augment its low yield and fair taste.

Genotype: Pure Indica; mainly used in crosses.
Taste: Hashy, spicy-to-bland flavor.
Smell: Low-to medium fragrance.
High: Trance-like body stone.
Potency: 25+% THC.

Water Hash Quality / Quantity from Trim: Great, but medium volume.

#10) Jack Herer
Named after the High Times Hall of Fame stalwart and author of The Emperor Wear No Clothes, this strain is the handiwork of Sensi Seeds. Jack Herer is famous for heavy resin and an immediate cerebral high. It's a favorite of many growers.

CLASSIC POT
5 Infamous Strains From the 60's

Acapulco Gold: This Mexican Sativa comes from the mountains and Hill around Acapulco. The Distinctive golden color was the result of sun-drying. Later, Acapulco Gold turned into a catch-all name to include anything similar

Panama Red: From the only place the Pan-American Highway cannot pass, El Tapon de Darien, this pure Sativa is famous among local Indians. It has distinctive red pistils (punto rojo) and is virtually always seeded.

Colombian Gold: This Distinctive Sativa comes from the Sierra Marta Mountains in Colombia. Locals call it La Mona (" Blonde Lady"). It grows at elevations of 5,500 to 9,500 feet and is very popular among the Kogi Indians.

Thai Stick: Marijuana buds are meticulously manicured and tied to 4 to 6 inch long slivers of bamboo with bamboo thread. Thai sticks were first introduced to Americans during the Vietnam War.

Lamb's Bread: This lanky Sativa was first bred in Jamaica's Westmoreland Parish by Rastafarian named Ian. Bob Marley's Favorite strain is currently being resurrected by heirloom breeders.
