Just wondering what, if any, virus protection you folks use. I have used nortons in the past and never had a problem. I have always had dial up and it wasn't that big of a deal. Now I have dsl and would like to set up some kind of protection. I use Mozilla firefox. I read about Mcafee and a few others. Just wanted some input on what others have used. After all, who would know better than you guys what kind of protection that I am looking for. Any info would be greatly appreciated. :hippie:

WA, I use Mcafee & like it alot...have had no problems & I am on a dial up as well. I am looking into getting the digital one thru our cable company but not sure yet. How do you like DSL? That is the other route I may go.

I have a high speed connection as well. It's wireless though. I have used nortons pro for quite awhile with no problems. I also have ad aware, and spybot. It still amazes me how many I used to get with internet explorer compared to now with firefox.

My Norton sucked bigtime. I now use Ad-aware & Stop-sign.

I found a website that has a list of cleaners, some free, some for pay, some with a 30-day trial. The best one of the 30-day trial cleaners was Kaspersky. That one cleaned out over 60 download files I had that no other cleaner could find, even AVG.

Here's the website:

Good Luck.

the mcafee is a lil less expensive. I know nothing about firewalls and what-not. I was gonna download it, but I like to have the disk in my hand. I guess I'll make a trip to the store this evening. Probably just be more confused after I get there. I love the dsl as far as speede goes, mermaid. I can surf a lot faster now. couldn't stand to go back to dial up now. thanks for the input guys and gals

wa, get the disk whatever you decide on. don't download it off the web cause when/if you have a problem, you'll have to wait for hours online to get help! been there, done that.

it was mcAfee that i first used (downloaded) and after my experiences with them, i hate to even hear the name!

this time (new computer), i went with norton's for both virus protection and for their firewall. you need both, brother, believe me!

once you install it, you can renew your subscription online each year with no hassle.

do the virus protections all come with a firewall or is that something that I have to buy seperately? Or, is there a version of each that comes with/without the firewall whichever way you want? is that understandable?

2 separate items: virus protection ... firewall

you'll want to buy both and not 'mix' brands

Hey web....I run Norton Anti & Firewall but i dont like Norton, it slows my computer down...........
I found it's all that automatic protection, updates, ect. that are the source of slowing with norton products. They use shitloads of resourses. I shut mine off and simply update and run a scan manually every few days.
I like the norton stuff. I did have macafee, but didn't like it. I had problems trying to configure it to personal/manual settings.

I got a new MS adware(beta) that is kewl as hell too. I've been scanning with both adaware and spybot and the MS program picked up a few items that they had missed, including a browser hijacker.

well, I bougt Norton "internet secutity" 2005 package. It includes: Norton antivirus, personal firewall, privacy control, antispam and parental control. All in one package. I have not noticed any slow down. Should I let the norton program "run" all of the time or should I, do like hill billy said, and shut it down and only run a scan and get updates every few days. I appreciate all of y'alls time and input.

wa, the firewall isn't going to help you if it's not running all the time.

just schedule your virus scan for once a week during the middle of the night ... or whenever you won't be using your computer.

hey wawona....same package that I have. I'm liking it so far. mary is right, if your security package isn't running, you're without protection.
The options that I leave turned off, are the the auto-update, scheduled scans and full time email protection. I just manually update and scan weekly and scan attatchments. BUT, if it isn't slowing your machine, then it's not a problem.

My "'puter" guy is only 22, but I consider him a frikkin' genius. He recommended the shutting off, fter I was having some "turtle" like problems with my old drive. Said the NAV is a real system hog, but one of the best out there. I've found that if I live by his recommendations, I get a lot less of that .. "rolling his eyes and shakin' his head"...;)
accompanied with a deep sigh..LOL
He is always turning me on too sweet programs, usually in return for sweet buds, but always at a fraction of retail. "Tweakxp pro" from totalidea.com is an excellent one for cleanups, fix's, a file shredder, internet tweaks, system tweaks, windows utilities, port monitor, bandwidth monitor. Install, un-install, backup, protect. creat virtual drives, hide drives, ect, ect. It is a free trial, with 30 activations before a purchase is required.

ive never had a seroius problem, and if something goes wrong i get some free ware and fix it.

but all i have to lose on here is a few favourate places on aol and 450 itunes tracks. thats all i care about.

FREE: Mozilla Firefox web browser -- the best ... http://www.mozilla.org
FREE: GRIsoft's AVG anti-virus software -- excellent ... http://www.grisoft.com/doc/71/lng/us/tpl/tpl01
FREE: LavaSoft's AdAware spyware removal -- great ... http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

With that combination of software I have virtually zero pop-ups. It's impossible to eliminate them all (unless you disable JavaScript), but Firefox and AdAware will stop 99.9% of them. AVG has never let me down, and I've been virus-free for years. I don't use a firewall because I share my cable connection with my roommate using a router, which has a built-in firewall. If you want a good, free firewall program check out ZoneAlarm ... http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

hey wa, even if you have a software firewall that is great but if you buy a cheap four point router most of them come with a hardware firewall much better i run both.

^^^yep...i agree. They sell both D-link and linksys 4 point routers at walmart. Between $49-100. Easy to set up too.
