A Shreveport couple face drug and weapons charges as a result of an investigation that led to seizure of marijuana estimated to be valued at $76,160.
Jerry Wayne Brown, 26, and Crystal Clark, 22, both of the 2800 block of Exposition Avenue, were booked into Shreveport City Jail on Thursday night on one count each of possession of a schedule I substance with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm near a controlled dangerous substance. They were being held Friday without bond.
Their arrests follow a monthlong investigation into a marijuana supply chain from Shreveport's Queensborough neighborhood to Vivian, Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator said during a news conference this afternoon. Shreveport police Chief Mike VanSant joined Prator at the conference since his officers and Caddo deputies investigated through the Caddo-Shreveport Narcotics unit.
A Caddo deputy who had received a tip about drug activity notified a Shreveport detective, the sheriff said.
Authorities seized 17 pounds of marijuana, $3,673 cash, an AK-47 rifle, a 9mm pistol and a box of gallon-size resealable plastic bags.
"That's a pretty good bit off the street," Prator said. "That's no indication of the amount of drugs we seize," referring to a December investigation that netted 61 pounds of marijuana "" the task force's biggest bust of the year.
In that bust, Shreveporter Quincy Dias, 35, was arrested on a charge of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. The 61 pounds of marijuana had a street value of more than $234,000. The house where Dias was arrested, in the 900 block of Jefferson Place in Shreveport's South Highland neighborhood, was a distribution center, police said.
Although 17 pounds of marijuana was a lot to have in one house, Prator said, it's barely a dent in local drug distribution.
"They were a big man and a big woman on Exposition (Avenue), but there's someone who's bigger," he said.
