* Repost For MedMan *

IT'S not pretty to see federal agents swooping across Los Angeles, raiding medical-marijuana dispensaries.

Legalizing pot's medicinal use was a compassionate decision California voters made 10 years ago, a decision that's never been appreciated in Washington, but one that the feds ought to respect just the same.

And yet it's hard to blame the federal government for cracking down, given how badly the state has failed to regulate the pot clubs.

Medical marijuana was supposed to be for the truly ill - cancer victims and AIDS patients who could use the drug to relieve pain or restore their appetites. Yet the number of dispensaries has skyrocketed from five in 2005 to 143 by the end of 2006. In North Hollywood alone, there are more pot clinics than Starbucks. Hacienda Heights was one of the first communities to get one in our area.

So either there's been an unreported, massive outbreak in terminal illnesses, or a rampant abuse in the distribution of "medical" marijuana. Now which one seems more likely?

Any doubt on that score was laid to rest earlier this week, when one pot club distributed fliers at a high school in Van Nuys - not exactly a cancer ward.

This problem is not new.

Local officials have been scrambling to regulate these seedy businesses or rein in the abuses. Hacienda Heights has a dispensary and Diamond Bar allows one. Whittier has said OK, too. Pasadena has enacted a ban and El Monte, Glendora and Monterey Park have moratoriums.

Proponents of medical marijuana insisted that Proposition 215 was not, in fact, backdoor legalization.

So now Washington is stepping in where some state and local officials have failed, and that's a shame. Whether or not you believe marijuana helps sick people, Californians voted to give very ill people that option, and that ought to be how the law is administered.

i have a friend who lives in cali. and she buys her weed from mmj patients, who buy it from the dispenseries and re-sell it. there are doctors there that will sign for you to get a card for $ 200 for any fucking reason.

the whole program is a fucking joke. i don't blame the feds for being pissed. if the damn thing was being treated legit by the people involved in it, then maybe the feds would treat it legit and leave it alone.

there are just too many fuck-ups and clown currently, and probably permanantly involved in the legalazation of mj. makes all who desire it look like a bunch of ass clowns.

look at ed rosenthal..one of the most famous mj spokesmen alive. shows up for court dressed like a fucking wizard..fucking moron. i wouldn't spend one more dime on a book from him or anything he has or does. all he did was cheapen and ridicule the movement.

until we take it serious we can't expect the feds or anyone else to. that means self regulation, by those in the movement...good luck.

Well just a thought but you ever think maybe the reason the system is the way it is just simply because the federal government refuses to make compromises and get involved and forcing the power to be placed in the hands of the state. Ya maybe there are a lot of ass clowns out there but man its up to people more like us,who i assume by your tone are more blended into society and lead for the most part completely normal lives aside the pot smoking, to be more active and keep strong with it. Something has to be done someday, hopefully in our lifetime!

i am for legalazation. and yes i blend into society. very few people know i smoke, and if they do it's because they smoke also. i take my freedoms seriously.

but the closest thing that we have to legalazation is being bastardized by a bunch of thugs. doctors hungry for money, and people with cards selling their meds. they are proving the government's point. that they cannot be trusted to run and operate a legal operation that helps sick people.

total legalazation is the only way. state sponsored med clinics have become a damn joke.

if there were some responsibility on the parts of those partaing in the venture i bet the feds would not be ass deep in them.

The people in Van Nuys distributing flyers at a high school should be (I hate to say it) prosecuted. That's not right.
I am a med patient here in cali, and while I agree somewhat with chicken, I also think the feds need to keep the fuck out of my private residence. I pay my taxes, I own a business, and am a productive member of society. What I do in my own home is my fucking business. PERIOD. So why shouldn't I be able to get my medication without fear of big brother?
On the flip side, there are those people who open a medical dispensary that have no scruples, that are merely in it for the money. Typically, those people are short lived in the community. The med MJ movement here is somewhat "tight-knit" in that the major players are well known by those in the community, and the real players are easily seperated from the fakers. All the med people I know are legit, go to legit Dr's. and are legitimately helped by Marijuana. But there are those that and don't necesarilly fly the straight and narrow.
Which puts people like me in a bad spot.
Ultimately, legalization is the best outcome for everyone.
