...this section is awfully quiet.
I'll bet many of us haven't even been thinking of outdoor growing season yet. I myself spent the "off season" learning the ropes of indoor. Well, it's just about time for all the outdoorsmen to begin preparing for this summers grow. So lets all share any tips, tricks, or questions you might have for preparing your babies for the great outdoors.
I am not the greatest thread starter, but if we can get this ball rolling I know it will be a big help for any newer outdoor growers, and even the most seasoned vet can pick up a new trick here and there.
Here's one I heard over the winter: Start your outdoor plants in square pots. I forget the exact ins and outs of why(and can't acces the info anymore), but I had to do with the roots. I guess when the roots hit a corner they will turn it an continue down the side, but if the hit an endless curve they will stopp trying to turn the corner once they realise it's futile.
I'm sure someone can explain this better than I did, but hell, I tried. Peace
Never heard about that trick before, but might be some truth in it. You get them in the ground before they get too rootbound they will grow, you can count on that. If you are planning on cloning a seed plant for outdoor you guys better get your seeds crackin. Time flies.

Nice Toa!!! best wishes on your early season run. It's way to early for me to prepare hole yet(3' of snow). I will be poppin seeds real soon. I'll probaly start an outdoor journal for the year, but be forwarned my pics suck!!!!
SFC- I wish I could access the piece on that. It was worded much better than mine, and really made sense. I know I will give it a shot on some and watch for differences, early and late in the life of the plants. Peace
I'm right there with all GM trillions of atoms&SFC ...as I already have my many plots & spots picked & cleaned out nice ...tilled & a early cultivation already done once... already ...then I add my own soil & bat guano, ect & my nice healthy already vegged out femalesin to Mother Natures Hands..& with the help of nothing but Bio-Bizz products all the way through (from the root juice, to the Bio-Grow, & then the Bio-Bloom & and last but the Veruy Best TOP MAX ...great stuff indeed!!! :icon_smil  ..also Even as you this week got most of my outdoor strains&plants popped from germing & now under the lights ...always is a + +IMO ..getting plants veggin as big as possible can indoors then ...they can handle the stress of the cold spring nights etc,..as a much larger healthier,Bigger plant ..can be started a lil sooner then a seedling....Fuck I cant wait!!!:icon_smil  I have lot of :pics: :icon_smil coming soon!!!PEACEOUT!!!!!:rasta2:

great tread, i love the great outdoors. and that looks like a good spot there trilli.
anyway, i come from a long line of growers. everyone in my family grows and we get slap nasty with it durring the summer months. not to brag but we grow more 'outdoors' than anyone else i know. and because of this, i get to hear all kinds of growing tips and myths. ive heard and tried it all, everything from square pots to the farmers alminac. but the best tip i can give is to grow one strain at a time. and if you want to try out all these tips or diff methods, do it. but do it on one strain and stick with it to the end.and dont do 10 diff things to one plant, this way you can see results from the spacific tip/method u are using. otherwise, you wont know which tip helped or hurt the most.
with that being said, heres some tips i think are important and benificial...
always dig a big hole, the bigger the better
pick a spot that gets evening sun...usualy south side of hill/mountain
no more than one plant per hole and no more than 5 plants to a spot
always use lots of perlite in outdoor soil to prevent root rot and mold probs
i use the 7 node topping method for outdoor plants with long veg times
fish, blood, bone and sometime poo products will cause rodent/bug probs
i lst my plants untill they begin to bud, then i let them loose to flower
hope this helps, but hands on experiance is the only way to learn what works best for you. so get to growing folks, and learn to use or debunk all these growing tips/myths.
peace:lite:

Great tips there Hoss. I do however swear by blood and bone meal, especially for "unattendable" plants. Good point on not trying ten things all on one plant, and limiting strains until "comfortable" outside. Those seems to be a very common noob mistake, indoors and out. PEace

Alright let me open a can of worms here:
Do you prefer 18/6 or 24/0 for vegging outdoor plants from seeds/from clones?
I prefer 18/6 for my seedlings(better root structure) and still pretty new to the cloning game so I won't comment yet. Peace
trillions of atoms

i use 24/0...
more light= more growth.
J-hoss
03-02-2007, 10:16 PM
i start my seeds with 24/0 for 2weeks. then i switch to 18/6 on week 3. they usualy stay on 18/6 untill they go outside, and then its whatever mother nature gives em. if i get a late start and the light cycle outdoors is more like 16/8 or 14/10 then i will increase my dark period to the same, for a few weeks before going outside.

the plants need a period of darkness to store energy....18/6 is your best bet IMO for starting indoor plants to move outdoors.
Also, here is my outdoor grow tip for you guys. Speaking of starting your plants, start them off in grow BAGS instead of pots...because when you take them outside...instead of having to take them out of the pots in putting them into the soil...you can just cut the bottom of the bags and WALLA! your good to go...
good luck and stay safe this season folks
I concur with Blowstree's. For the 20 something cents the bags cost, and the selection of sizes you can get they cannot be beat for outdoor . I have been using them for a couple of years now. Before them I used styrofoam cups. The cups will work, but trust us the bags are better.

Re you guys talking about Peat pellets? If so these or styrofoam cups both seem small to me, no? I usually end up in 4 or 5 inch pots before hitting the ground. Like I said I like to get tehm the best possible root structure before putting tehm out. This seems more important to me than a few extra inches of growth, since good roots will overcome this very quickly outdoors. Peace

nothing to do with the medium...its about the container your growing in..
instead of growing in pots, you would grow in plastic bags. and you can let your plants get as big as you want before you take them outside...but the advantage of the bags...is when you take them outside, instead of removing the whole plant out of the pots, which can cause stress, you can just cut the bottom of the plastic bag out and put the bag down in the ground...the roots will grow out of the bottom...
hope that helped..later

so you keep the plastic bag on the roots ? why not split the bag and unwrap the whole root system and let it go ? seems the plastic would choke the root system..and i have never seen a plant stressed from up-potting or being moved from a pot to the ground..
BlowsTrees
03-04-2007, 12:49 AM
damn dudes....you cut the BOTTOM of the BAG
BOTTOM....so the roots...where they grow out....can grow freely from the now bottomless bag....because hence there is no bottom...
you leave the rest of the bag on because it doesn't matter...hell, take it off...leave it on...whatever you want
during any kind of transplanting, the plants go through stress. not removing the rootball and exposing it to air will inturn cause less stress on the plants.
get it now? hope so... :)

The bags are plastic? I've never seen those. The only thing of like that I've seen are bigger burlap type(not really burlap, thinner but almost the same material) I've never used them but know a few guys who swear by them. Peace

HEY ALRIGHT
I was able to access the thread I read about the square pots for outdoor plants.
Here it is:
Just watched a DVD my Mrs has by the Royal Horticultural Society, they have found by accident, then done studies that prove square pots promote root growth, particularly used in transplanting
Plants in square pots have roots that can sense the pot edge has a direction and put out more towards where they 'think' there will be room, whereas a circular pot takes a root about an hour to recognise as basically leading nowhere so they head down
When you look at the pots nurseries use they're square and not just for jamming more in the space...
I've noticed this in the past when I ran out of pots and used a random square pot that the roots were always good .... never put 2 and 2 together until I watched the DVD ....
So put your seeds in a square pot when they first get transplanted, when you plant them outdoors, put the square pot in a round hole .... -quote
Like I said much better wording than my explaination, lol Peace

i got the whole bottom of the bag deal..i understand..cut the bottom..but...roots grow from the sides and the bottom of the rootball..
so part of your rootball will be trapped in plastic....
not trying to argue, just throwing out another option...peace

lol werd i wasn't getting mad...i just thought u didn't get the concept. and you bring a good point to the table. ive personally never had a problem with it. but yo, to each his own. it always just helped to keep things a little neater and easier to bring outside. peace

it is a neat way to get them outside, i have never used the bags though..
if i did i'd cut the bottom out set that puppy in the hole and cut the bag from top to bottom and remove it and rake the dirt in around the root ball and water the shit outta it...all in one quick move..lol.
i'm just glad it is warming up and we are having this outdoor discussion...lol

Where can I check out these plastic bags? Any links? I like the idea, cause the "burlap" type are a PIA for watering(if you over water you got a mess, kinda why I never tried em)
