This is basically a pictorial version of most cannabutter recipes. The key to making great cannabutter is a double boiler. I found a nice one for about $20 at Bed, Bath & Beyond.
First, check your recipe to see how much butter/oil you will need. Most out-of-the-box brownie recipes call for 1/4 cup water + 1/3 cup oil (about 5-6 tablespoons). We decided to use real butter instead of oil becacuse that's what we had. Real butter (not margarine) has a high fat content, which is good for absorbing the THC.
NOTE: The double boiler needs only about 2" of water in the lower pot to be effective. The steam from this water will heat the upper pot. If you use too much water it might boil over.
Start with 6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) of butter in the double boiler:

On LOW-MEDIUM heat it should only take a few minutes for the butter to melt:

While the butter is melting get your trim ready:

I used 1/2oz leaf trim from my WWs and Skunk:

Once it was VERY dry (about 10 days after harvest) I put all the trim through my herb grinder to get this:

Because we used so much DRY leaf matter it soaked up all the butter quickly, and we had to add another 5-6 tablespoons of butter to keep the mixture moist:

Even though we had plenty of trim, I decided to add some of these buds (apparently from Maine) because they smoke too harsh for me:

After grinding up another 3-4g of those buds I tossed them into the mix:

For about 20-30 minutes let the mixture continue cooking on LOW-MEDIUM heat, stirring it every few minutes:

When it's done it'll look something like this, and it will have that very distinct odor we all know and love:

Now we want to extract the cannabutter from the mash:

Using a spoon, flour sift and measuring cup, press the mash into the flour sift with your spoon until the mash gets mostly dry:

When I finished mine there was a little more than 1/3 cup butter even though I used almost twice that much. Some butter will evaporate as you cook, and some of it will probably remain in the trim, but what's left is extremely potent. As you can see the color is completely changed. Although it looks brown in these pictures it's actually very dark green. Now you're ready to use this in your brownie mix or any other recipe that calls for butter/oil.

The remaining trim should be fairly dry and worthless. I threw it away:

Finally, the magic brownies:

These brownies are probably my best to date. Because of the double boiler none of the weed burned like it can do in a skillet. Also, using the flour sift I was able to keep 99.9% of the leaf matter out of the cannabutter so the brownies are a good texture and taste pretty damn good.
Around 11:45pm on 4/20 my roommate and I each ate a big brownie (12 total in the batch) + some scraps left in the pan. Within an hour we were feeling really good, and after another hour we were GONE. Around 4am I finally managed to go to bed but I was still really stoned! A small brownie is probably a better dose.
ENJOY
