I have used rockwool with the clay pebbles in net pots but i gave up.

Ive used rockwool, hydroton, and just straight water.
Id have to say that the hydroton was the best IMO.
I liked rockwool but it is tough to control the ph like web said.

I only use rapid rooters now. Those are great. I germ and grow in them. That way the plant can start a pretty good root system before I put it in the Hydro System.

i use rapid rooters, too! i really like the results i get with them. i bury them down into some hydroton in my 6" net pot once the roots start growing good!

i only use rapid rooters in combo with Hydrotons, they are much easier to work with and dont throw your numbers off a bit.

I use Perlite, for me it's the best. I would like to try clay balls one day, cause you can re-use em.

I use rapid rooters & clay rocks . It's been working great for me but it's just a big hassle washing em then boiling etc. Walking thru the entire house into the kitchen to wash/boil rocks...
Nephews & nieces ask: "Uncle what you cooking?",
I reply: "Uhh Coco Krispys?"
Nephews & nieces ask: "Ouuuu can I have some pleaaaassseee?"
I reply: "Uhh sorry kids, these coco krispys are for my lady friend named Mary Jane who's been staying the past few months. Sorry Kids, how bout some Mac & Cheese?"
Nephews & nieces say: "Mmm... Ok =)"
IT WORKS EVERYTIME THOUGH?! lol

I use the tiny rockwool slabs to root cuttings in, it works well.
I use a combo of 50/50 hydroton and perlite in my hempy buckets. Heres how it works: I put the hydroton down on the bottom half of the buckets and fill the perlite in on the top half. Once the cuttings root i stick them in the top with the perlite.
It works great but as mentioned earlier it is a huge pain in the ass to clean. I alos re-use about half the perlite too (recycle EVERYTHING!)
Hydroton is cost effective! If you have the patience to clean it you can re-use it many times. It reduces the ammount of "evidence" you need to despose of in your garbage, invaluable IMO.
To clean used perlite or hydroton you will need to be delicate when removing the roots (makes it easier to seperate). Collect the hydroton into a plastic pot (the ones you grow soil in) and once collected put them into a bowl or tray and soak them in hydrogen peroxide and hot water (I go kinda heavy on the 3 % peroxide). I let it set for a few hours, then drain and air dry. The perlite should be cooked in your oven on 450 to dry it (this also kils the little root particles still in the perlite).

it's a couple of years later from the original post, and i've switched to hempy. i still root my seeds and clones in rapid rooters, then put them into a mixture of vermiculite and perlite and grow em out. :D

I would have said otherwise, when asked during the past, but currently I'm very fond of coco mixed with my vermicompost. In it are recycled clay pebbles and perlite to add bulk to that stuff. Has worked for me so far, I didn't even have adjusted my water the last grow.
