Hair Mats

Hey there,

I was watching the news last night and they had an item on this new product...Hair Mats.
This is real hair :eek: (outa china) and it is made into mats that are placed on top of soil crops and especially tomato's.
It is used as a nutrient supply:dunno: and also helps prevent evaporation. Anyone else heard of this?:read:

From the seach I did, I think there are two general opinions on this.
1) People believe that hair won't breakdown and could also hold unwanted chemicals. And
2) People swear by this, and quote great reports.

But I didn't find anyone who showed how it is to be used. Oh well

I came across this info before. Supposedly hair is an excellent source of N. Its a good thing to add to your compost heap but I have heard the same as DefCon3 in that hair takes a very long time to break down..in the region of 10 years I think. If you have ever seen pictures of exhumed bodies you will see that the hair remains for a VERY long time. I guess it would be good as a long time slow release fertilizer for your garden but no good for us guys growing annuals in simulated enviroments. Might be a good idea for a guerrila patch though..
