View Full Version : Germinating Lowryders

I recently planted 12 lowryder #2 F2 beans directly in soil. 6 days later none were showing so I dug them up. Only 5 had germinated. Don De Marco got similar results with my F2's...only 3/7 germinated. So I got to work checking out other peoples results on the web.

People all over were having the same problem...even with the F1's. Apparently its the Ruderalis genetics which have really tough shells. The seed tries to germinate but can't crack open the shells. It ends up crushing itself to death inside the shells in the attempt to break free.

The Jointdoctor's advice is to precrack them. I followed the following guide with some fresh seeds based on this advice yesterday and within 4 hours 3/6 were germinating. This morning I found 5/6 germinated and planted them this morning. A bit of advice I can offer too is that before you crack them you should soak them for about 2 hours to soften up the shells...it makes them easier to crack without damaging the seed.

Anyway...here is the guide I used..

I germinated 7 seeds and got three seedlings out of them. One of them was quite weak and was sorted out. Since I've heard of Migros results before, I decided to germinate them in a cup of water with a bit B1 vitamines. Slightly cracking the shells seems reasonable and I can post a picture of DJ Shorts method later on. Anyway, when doing this, the seeds have to be watched closely, because they're more likely susceptible to fungi or diseases.

Maybe scuffing them would work too..I maybe try a little experiment with that in 14 days when I do the next batch.

I had a fungus infected seed batch on which I tried soaking with a dash of hydrogen peroxide. From the first 15 seeds without that treatment none germinated. From the second treated batch I was able to rescue 3 seedlings from 15 seeds at last. The seeds were stored in a Kinder Surprise Egg. Usually I store my fresh seeds in small wood boxes or matchboxes. Later they go into ziplocks. Anyway I forgot this particular feminized JS batch and due to lack of air exchange two seeds were affected with mold. That is generally a huge problem for germinating. The seedlings that made it are strong and lush never the less.

And here is the illustration for the seed opening.

Lowryder 2 is an excellent hybrid. Wonderfully fruity tasty with soaring highs and excellent yield potential in SOG, especially if I feminize some. I can even grow it outdoors here if I choose in our very short and very Northern (200km from Artic) summer. What would I want to change about that? Alot of people have this anti-lowryder shit going on.....I wonder if it would be the same if I handed them a spliff of organically grown LR2 without telling them what it was :)

I am thanks. Obviously it doesnt end here though :)

If you were to recommend a fast-finishing, short but decent yielding, Indica-dominated but not too couch-locky strain and quite psychoactive that has good pain killing properties...What would it be?

Not just you Tap of course. I'd love to hear suggestions from anyone who feels they can provide some guidance or experience in this area.

I have only been growing for 1.5 years and I consider myself VERY inexperienced but I am verging on being self-sufficient for me and my wife thanks to the lowryder. Space is an issue because my grow has to be stealth. So I cut it down to one box...no veg area really, so my plants must finish quickly to get enough and be small enough to still allow a sq/ft or so for my "experiments" :) The Sadhu is good in these areas too but from experience she needs a good veg time for decent yields and I would rather keep it quick i.e. very quick... 12/12 from seed. (If you let her root out her final pot before flowering her colas are rock hard and PHAT!, even under CFL :) ) This pic is from my first grow... only day 49 out of 60-65....261w mixed CFL.

I guess this has been off topic but its my thread and I can do what I like :)

I'm off topic as well, but I stay with the LRs. I have grown the LR1 before and despite they're tiny, my experience is that they give a nice overall stone. Maybe not too strong, but you can always take more.
Not all phenos are nice. I killed the mutant today, to have more room for the Oger pollinated one. Reason: Mutant was a thrips magnet, really. And I could lst the remaining nice LR.
I'm really interested in the offspring. Maybe I can use it for my outdoor adventure. That could even give me several harvests between May and October.

You will probably be pleasantly surprised then :) Specially if that seed came from the little mum as I suspect.
