Never ever ever.
For 1 thing, if they work (injure someone), you'll lose your crop AND go to prison for a lot longer than you would for just growing pot.
If someone is injured by a booby trap--let's say gets a eye put out by the "fishhooks on a line at eye level" trap-- go to a hospital, the MUST tell the authorities how and where they got injured, even if they don't want to.
Know what will happen?
Case in point:
A family--a mom, dad and their 2 kids--we out hiking one Sunday in the woods.
The 10-year old girl needed to pee and stepped off the trail into the bushes and walked into one of those fishhook traps and got 3 fishooks embedded in her scalp.
I was hiking not too far behind them and heard the screaming and ended up helping the mother hold down and help calm the little girl who was nearly hysterical with pain and was trying to pull the hooks out while the dad, a long distance runner, went for help.
He had to run 6 miles, call 911, and it took a total of almost 3 hours for someone in a vehicle to arrive and get the girl to a hospital. She had to have her head shaved and undergo surgery to remove the hooks.
Since I worked for the forest service at the time, I and several others job was to then "stake out" the grow site (about a dozen plants) and wait for the grower to show up. When he did we called the Big Boys via walkie-talkie's and when the grower got back to his car they were waiting for him.
He was charged with growing pot AND a number of other charges (such as endangering public safety, and assault) and after a trial the grower was sentenced to 5 years in jail (if the girl had been 6" taller the hooks would have put out her eyes) and had to pay restitution (medical and pain & suffering) that totalled many thousands of dollars.
And of course the grower lost his pot.
In addition, booby-trap injuries give ALL pot growers a bad name, and give local leo's good reason to "crack down" on growers.
I just read where someone here said they'd shoot a potential ripper with a shotgun. Instant long prison term, since the victim would have to report where he got shot.
To sum up:
No booby-traps = lose your crop to a ripper.
Booby-traps = lose your crop AND go to prison and pay out thousands of $.
Please, no booby-traps and for goodness sakes don't shoot anyone.
The best way to protect your crop is to plant them so remotely that they are unlikely to be found.
And realize that a criminal enterprize has risks--like losing your stuff. Getting ripped off is part of growing outside, and you need to accept that possibility.
P.S. When the grower I mentioned was taken to the police station, several of the officers who had kids kicked the shit out of him (and said he tryed to escape). In a perfect example of karma, he was treated at the same hospital the little girl was in.
