I thought it was time to show off my new grow. I'm starting this early so I can show off the babies. I have three strains growing at the moment. I have Asian Slore from Pound4Pound, an Indonesia sativa, along with NYCD F2's and Somatooth #2 x NYCD....from our buddy annaC.
I soaked the seeds overnight in cold tea in the refrigerator. They then went to paper towels where they sprouted in only one day. From there they went into rapid rooters. The first two shots are day 3 and 4 in the rapid rooters. At that point they went into 16oz cups. The soil mixture is:
Coco fiber, perlite, pumice, compost and peat moss combined with bone meal, bat guano, kelp meal, green sand, soybean meal, leonardite, k-mag, glacial rock dusk, alfalfa meal, oyster shell flour, earthworm castings and mycorrhizae
The rest of the photos are from day 5 (today) and they all are showing their second set of true leaves. The photos were all shot using the CFLs that they're vegging under. The shots were taken at F22 at 1/15th of a second (on a tripod of course).
I sure hope annaC shows up here to see the show! :icon_smil
(Sorry...the pics are out of order)

Here are the babies at day seven. Nice and healthy. Since there are a lot of natural nutes in the soil, I've got them on water only for now.

Here we are at day 11 and all the babies are doing great. I'll start nutes within the next week. Right now it's strictly water....there are lots of nutes in the soil. I'm scared to burn them right now. Yesterday I switched them to 18/6 where they'll stay until they go to 12/12. I'm really happy that I haven't seen any signs of stretching in any of the strains. I'm glad I marked them or wouldn't be able to tell one strain from another at this point.

Here's the update. Still no problems at all. Sorry if the colors are off...my monitor needs calibration. The darker plant is NYCD and the lighter plants are Asian Slore.

One quick question.... I've moved them to 18/6 and I'm wondering if it's OK if the temps drop to around 70 degrees at night. ???
Nesta

yep, thats just about optimal there steve. i like my night temps to be between 65 and 70. everything is lookin good :icon_smil

The kids are now at day 15 and most are beginning to show their 5th set of true leaves. I'll start them on nutes next week. More on that when I start'm. So far, only one runt and he got "recycled" today. No room in the closet for weak performers. :D
The translucent cups have proven handy for checking out root growth....I posted some shots of that too. I've got both indicas and sativas growing, so feeding should be "interesting". I've upped the humidity to 50-60% to please the sativas.

Lookin good there Steve. I like the plastic translucent cup idea. That is a good one

Thanks Herbman. It makes it very easy to see if they're getting root bound. And they're dirt cheap :bongdude:

Looking good there steve. I may be wrong, but i don't think that is it good for the roots to be exposed to light. I may be wrong, but you may consider a removable cover for those clear cups. I just cracked some of annaC's beans myself. It will be nice to watch your progress.

I've heard the same thing Nesta, but all the reliable pundits I talk to highly recommend them and I've had no problems at all, so I'm assuming that's a folk tale....like so many around the canna world.

Its due to the algea that forms. When its not robbing the roots of nutes its prone to a number of bad things like fungal rot. Algea cant grow in darker pots.

05-27-2005, 01:15 AM
I suppose that's possible, but I've never experienced it and neither have any of my buddies. If it happens to me on a grow, I'll definitely quit using them. In the meantime everything is good and it's sure nice to be able to view the root growth.

I like to use clear plastic cups for seedlings and clones, too. The algae thing can be a problem, but it is easily resolved. Most likely you won't have your seedlings/clones in those small cups long enough for algae to grow and cause serious problems. If you see any algae, simply transplant into a bigger pot that is not transparent, and soon the algae will die. This happened with a few of my seedlings from my latest grow, and they all turned out great.

Plex pots sound like they'd be a lot more expensive...and you have to build them? Hmmmmm. Maybe I'm not understanding right...wouldn't be the first time. :o
Here's the pictures of the babies as of today. It's now 3.5 weeks and everyone is doing really well. They've had two servings of Alaska Fish Fertilizer. The last one was at 725ppm. They had their last drink today and I just gave them straight water. All the plants are still short and bushy except two. They're not really bad...just an inch taller than the others.
Again...these are:
NYCD
Asian Slore
NYCD x Somatooth #2

gee...make something? aparently im ther only one tyhat likes to make things
yes make 0ne...expensive? it'd cost u 10 bux to make 1 6"x6"x6" pot...anyways..you'll get a much more dense root ball, and less wrapped arround the bottom...meaning more of the roots are suspended in the healthy soil rather than located at the bottom of the pot where salts collect. u dont have to make one...i keep my moms in the bottom 6" of orange juice cartons. for my growing stock i use 6" black square pots, and then i transplant into 2.5 gallon water jugs at 3 weeks into 12's, which are clear BTW. werx for me...i keep em in small pots so long to control hight. in such small pots they stick at 8-12 inches with little or n o cutting involved...then after the 3 week stretch period, i transplant and the buds explode...hope i explained this well enough.
oh and BTW ive never had any algae...alow the soil to dry out and algae wont form...poorly draining soils have algae probs in clear pots...so if ur growin in mud then u might have an issue, and certain climates may have issues withit but ive done so in az and ak so take it as u will
Happy Growin' :pimp:

I guess I'm just cheap...or lazy...or both. For $10 I can buy 20 1 gallon pots. That's where the babies will go next.
Here's some pics from yesterday. The shot with three plants shows the amount of variation from the most compact to the stretchiest. Most look like the center plant. The shot of the single plant is the Somatooth#2 x NYCD from annaC.
I'll keep updating them.

Here's the first pic of the babies in their new homes. Four weeks and four days. Only minor stress...a little leaf cupping on a couple of plants. All they've had is straight tap water since transplanting and everyone's looking happy and healthy. Looks like I may have a couple of female preflowers and a possible polyploid. No signs of boys...yet. More pics on these very shortly...along with a root shot from the cups

Thanks Max....this was my first grow in a while, and my first in a closet, so I've been trying to take good care of them. The genetics have to take a lot of the credit. Not one has shown any of the typical problems.
Did find my first and only male so far.....
http://www.stevesarich.com/growshots/62202.jpg
These appeared overnight! I've been watching really closely since it's a perfect time for them to show sex without forcing them. Just woke up yesterday and there they were. He's now out soaking up the sun. I'll keep him alive just to get some male flower shots.
